|Will just one RAM card cause issues?|

I need your assistance. My son is building a nice gaming computer, but we're having issues. Have you ever heard of a motherboard needing perfect pairs of RAM cards to even function? I never have in the past, but nowadays, who knows? The mobo is a Gigabyte z170-HD3. It has 4 DDR4 slots, but they are color coded so that 2 are one color and 2 are another. The owners manual only tells you where to put a set of 2 or a set of 4, but not just one. I've confirmed that all of the individual pieces of hardware are good, they just don't work together. Everything powers up for a couple of seconds, and then shuts off. A couple of seconds later it all repeats indefinately. The BIOS wont start up or anything, and I'm thinking it might be because he only has one RAM card. Does that make sense to any of you?
